Why this directory exists

Penang Renovations is a working directory of renovation contractors, interior designers, and home-service trades across Penang state. We fill the gap between Listing.my (10 Penang listings, no verification) and Recommend.my (KL-only popular searches). There hasn’t been a Penang-native renovation directory with verification depth, until now.

Three principles

1. Discovery, not marketplace

We don’t sit between you and the contractor. There’s no quote routing, no commission on jobs, no escrow. You message the contractor directly via WhatsApp; they quote you directly; you decide. Service marketplaces that mediate the transaction (Kaodim is the cautionary tale, raised USD 17.6M, went bust 2022) eventually leak their customers off-platform. We never had them in the first place.

2. Verification depth over listing count

We’d rather have 100 verified contractors than 10,000 auto-imported names with no signal. Every claimed listing displays an SSM business registration number; CIDB-licensed contractors display their grade. Reviews are tied to verified bookings, no anonymous tips, no spam. 3. Penang-only in v1

Better to be the best at one place than spread thin across five. We cover George Town, Bayan Lepas, Tanjung Bungah, Butterworth, and Bukit Mertajam, with suburb-level depth. Kuching, KL, JB are not on the v1 roadmap. If we get this right here, we’ll consider expanding.

What we don’t do

  • Booking or quotation routing between you and contractors
  • Holding deposits or escrow
  • Commission on completed jobs
  • Hidden paid placements (every Featured slot is badged, every paid tier is disclosed)
  • AI-generated reviews, fake testimonials, or anonymous review feeds
  • Selling your data to third parties

Coverage today

5 Penang cities, ~25 trade categories, ~50 suburb-level service areas. The directory grows weekly as new contractors claim listings or get imported from public sources. We’re explicit about provenance: every unclaimed listing carries an “Auto-imported” badge with a disclosure that it hasn’t been verified yet.

Who runs this

Penang Renovations is built and run by Wei Han, based in Penang. It’s a sole-proprietorship operation, built without external funding and supported by claim and Featured-tier fees from contractors who use the directory. Listing counts and traffic numbers are never inflated. The FAQ covers most common questions.
