Aircon installation cost in Penang — split unit, multi-split, and ducted

Real installed prices for aircon in Penang — RM 1,200 for a 1HP split-unit basic install through RM 18,000 for a multi-room ducted system, plus how copper-pipe distance and concealed routing change the number.

Aircon installation in Penang ranges from RM 1,200 for a 1HP single split-unit with surface trunking to RM 18,000+ for a 4-zone ducted system in a renovated condo or shophouse. The cost driver is rarely the unit itself — it's the copper piping distance, whether trunking is surface-mounted or concealed, and whether the unit is sized correctly for the room and Penang's coastal climate.

What you're actually paying for

A typical aircon installation quote splits into four parts:

  1. The unit — compressor + indoor head. Most quote variance ends up here.
  2. Copper piping — usually charged per metre. RM 35-80 per metre depending on insulation and connector quality.
  3. Trunking — the plastic conduit hiding the pipes. Surface-mount is cheap; concealed (chased into walls) is 2-3x.
  4. Labour + bracket + commissioning — fixed component, usually RM 250-500.

Some installers also separate "first 4 metres free" pricing — common in big-box quotes, but the "free" metres are real cost that's reflected elsewhere in the line items.

Cost by system type

Single split-unit (1 zone)

The most common Penang install — one outdoor compressor + one indoor head, serving one room.

Capacity Unit cost only Installed cost (typical)
1.0 HP (suitable for rooms ≤ 12 sqm) RM 1,100-1,800 RM 1,400-2,600
1.5 HP (12-18 sqm) RM 1,400-2,400 RM 1,800-3,200
2.0 HP (18-24 sqm) RM 1,800-3,200 RM 2,400-4,200
2.5 HP (24-30 sqm) RM 2,400-4,200 RM 3,200-5,800

Brand premium adds 15-30%: Daikin, Mitsubishi, and Panasonic command higher prices for similar specs than York, Acson, or Midea.

Multi-split (2-4 zones, one compressor)

One outdoor compressor with two to four indoor heads. Cheaper than separate splits if zones are close together; loses cost advantage past 4 zones.

  • 2-zone multi-split, both 1.5HP: RM 5,500-8,500 installed
  • 3-zone multi-split (1.5+1.5+1.0 HP): RM 7,800-12,500 installed
  • 4-zone multi-split (similar mix): RM 10,500-16,000 installed

Best fit for: condos where the compressor location is limited and you want one outdoor unit instead of three or four.

Ducted system (concealed, central)

Standard in new boutique condos and high-end shophouse renovations. One large compressor + a ducted indoor unit hidden in the ceiling void.

  • 3HP ducted serving 2-3 rooms: RM 11,000-15,000 installed (without ceiling work)
  • 4-5HP ducted serving 3-4 rooms: RM 14,000-22,000 installed
  • Plus ceiling/duct work: RM 3,000-8,000 depending on access and routing

Best fit for: full renovations where the ceiling is being rebuilt anyway. Retrofit ducted into an existing untouched ceiling is rarely cost-effective.

What pushes a quote higher

Copper pipe distance

Standard install assumes the indoor unit is within 4-5 metres of the outdoor unit. Penang shophouses often need 8-12 metres because the outdoor compressor lives on the back rear courtyard. Each extra metre is RM 35-80, and over ~12 metres the system loses efficiency (lower SEER, harder for warranty claims).

Concealed vs surface trunking

Surface trunking is the bumpy plastic channel you see running along walls. Concealed routing chases the copper into the wall, then plasters over — looks clean but adds RM 600-1,500 per indoor unit and only makes sense during a wider renovation when walls are already being touched.

High-floor / heavy compressor

A 4HP+ compressor on a 15th-floor balcony needs a craned install or a 2-3 person lift; some buildings require strata management approval. Add RM 300-800 for high-rise handling.

Coastal-spec compressor

Penang's seafront condos (Batu Ferringhi, Tanjung Bungah, Gurney) need coastal-spec compressors with anti-corrosion fin coating. The Daikin "Coastal" series, Mitsubishi "anti-corrosion premium" — these add RM 200-600 to the unit cost but extend the compressor's outdoor life from 4-5 years to 8-10.

Sizing — what HP do you actually need?

A quick rule of thumb for Penang's hot-humid climate:

  • Bedroom up to 100 sqft (10 sqm): 1.0 HP
  • Master bedroom 100-180 sqft (10-17 sqm): 1.5 HP
  • Living room 180-280 sqft (17-26 sqm): 2.0 HP
  • Open-plan / shophouse front room 280+ sqft: 2.5-3.0 HP, or a 1.5+1.5 multi-split

Over-sizing wastes electricity (the compressor short-cycles) and creates muggy rooms — the unit cools fast but doesn't dehumidify. Under-sizing means the compressor never stops, runs hot, and dies in 3-4 years. A reputable installer will refuse to fit a unit that's wrong for the room.

Warranty + after-sales

Standard new-unit warranty is 1 year on the compressor and 5 years on parts, manufacturer-direct. The installation labour warranty is usually separate — 6-12 months from the installer.

Don't pay for a "10-year extended warranty" upsell at install time — the next 5-9 years are servicing, not warranty. Budget RM 80-150 per servicing visit, every 4-6 months, instead. See our aircon servicing frequency guide for the full cadence.
